  1. I have a one year old male shih tzu (neutered) My husband and I seperated six months ago so we dog share. He spends most of his time at the original home. He will be outside for along time and come in the house and pee on the bed, or rug. When at the other home it is a large apartment complex and I have a indoor box for him that he usually will relieve himself in....he won't use the one at his main residence. My husband has had it with him and wants to give him away even though he loves the dog. I am not allowed to have pets at my residence so I must sneak him in when I have him...What should we do to keep him from peeing in the house?????? Deborah - Deborah from Davenport Iowa

We suggest going back to basic house training and crate training. We do NOT recommend having a "toilet" in the house for the dog. This is often confusing and results in accidents. http://www.hssv.org/LIBRARY/PDF/Behavior/housetraining.pdf http://www.hssv.org/LIBRARY/PDF/Behavior/crate_training.pdf You could also try putting a belly band on the dog as well. http://www.schaferkennel.com/P12.html   « less

If the dog is over 6 months old, she should be sleeping all night without needing to go outside. Check with your vet about any problems that may be causing her to go more frequently. Make sure her diet is a high quality human grade diet and she is fed at least 4 hours before bedtime. Next, go outside WITH her and make sure she toilets but do not play with her, feed her, talk to her, pet her, etc. You are merely the taxi to get outside. Once inside, IGNORE her. Put ear plugs in but do not talk, feed, play, pet, etc. This will get WORSE before it gets better but you should see a decrease in the behavior within 5 to 7 days.   « less

  7. Hi! We gotour dachshund about 2 yr. ago. Cali is 5 or 7 yrs old says her vet. She was shoved from home to home until we got her. I dont understand her. If I pick her up, even supoorting her back, she does a bite growl thing. The bite is very lite and and doesnt feel like anything.I dont want her afraid to let me pick her up. She also is very sensitive with her bottom area, doesnt want to be touched.I can feel her tense up and burp and get stiff. I want to ease her anxiety. She does her own thing and is very hard headed, just like her breed! She freaks out with the slightest touch, (ie nipping her back legs slightly when walking down the stairs. She wines like she has been kicked full force.I think a lady was mean to her. She has warmed up tremendously but really loves her dad and does weird things towards me. How can we make here feel at ease, safe and know we are not gonna abandon her? Was she abused? How can we make her more comfortable?? Thanks Lisa - Calismom from san antonio, tx

First we recommend a full physical with a regular vet including xrays of her back and a chiropractic exam as well. Next, contact a humane trainer to help change her fearful aggression into relaxation. http://www.hssv.org/BEHAVIOR/train_nation.htm Avoid any trainer who tells you to yell, hit, shock, jerk the leash, throw things at, use a pinch or choke collar on your dog OR if they forbid you to use food in the training. We suggest putting up cat fencing around the area next to the doggie door: http://www.hssv.org/LIBRARY/PDF/Behavior/catfenceb.pdf This would also keep the coyotes out of your yard. The other option is to buy a door that has a magnetic lock. Be aware that some cats learn to exit the door as the dog is going through. http://www.petdoors.com/electronic_pet_doors.htm   « less

I work from my home so therefor the dog gets plenty of daily walks. He urinates several times during these walks. I know dogs like to mark there territory but please, mark it outside. Any advice would be great. Thanks! - Kevin from Manheim, PA
