  1. I am a 37 year old with a scar on my neck as a result of thyroid surgery. The surgery took place almost 4 years ago and the scar's appearance has not improved since the surgery. It itches and is very sensitive. I also had a c-section when I gave birth that did not leave any scarring (looks GREAT) and a foot surgery that didn't leave scarring. Why is there a difference? and, What would you recommend to remove or reduce the appearance of the scar on my neck? - BG from Dallas, Texas

Yes, Fat injections to the buttocks are a successful way of enhancing that area. This requires that the fat survive as living tissue. So you need your own fat to do the procedure, unless you have an identical twin willing to donor the tissue. Otherwise foreign fat will be rejected and not survive. Kidney and heart transplants from other donors succeed only if there is a relatively close tissue match and the patient kept on chronic expensive and powerful anti-rejection medication. This is curently not practical for cosmetic procedures.   « less

My stomach still looks pregnant. The rest of my body is normal. I am 40lbs overweight but even when I lose weight my stomach still looks huge. Can they repair the hernia and do a tummy tuck all at the same time? Who would I see? - Ronda from Seatt.e, WA

Ronda, When performing any tummy tuck, the rectus fascia (the tendinous layer overlying the abdominal muscles) is tightened. Your hernia is most likely separation of the rectus muscles due to stretching of this fascia (called a rectus diastasis). Tightening the fascia will correct your problem and give you a flat abdomen. It would be best to loose weight prior to the tummy tuck surgery to reduce inra-abdominal fat (the fat within the abdominal cavity and around the abdominal organs). This will allow maximum tightening of this fascia.   « less

Abdominal liposuction involves removal of superficial fat above the abdominal muscles. A laparoscopic hysterectomy will not interfere with the liposuction and the abdominal wall scars from the hysterectomy can be used for the liposuction. I would suggest waiting at least four to eight weeks after the hysterectomy so that you are in the best physical condition and recovered before proceeding with liposuction.   « less

Scarring after any surgery or trauma is at its worst at about four weeks after the event. Biologically, scar tissue (collagen) is layed down in reaction to surgery and becomes its most disorganized at that time. Through a process of collagen synthesis and resorption, scar tissue gradually matures, taking four months or more to achieve its best appearance. Be very patient. Massaging will help, but time is the best cure for you scar.   « less

  9. Hi Dr. Rosenberg, I was a client of yours back in 03. I had my second procedure done with you and you did subpectoral breast implants. I am still very satisfied with the work. My question is, I am about 2 months from delivering my first child and I'd like to breastfeed. Can you tell me what the likelihood is of being able to BF? - Chrystina from San Jose, CA

Can this be corrected? My doctor said to "ignore it, she's never seen this, doesn't know what it is, can't be removed." I'm very upset as it's quite noticeable. Thank you. - mimiclaire from tucson az

Mimi, The lumpiness is probably due to what is called "fat necrosis" or death of injected fat cells with subsequent replacement with deep scar tissue. As long as the lumpiness does not produce actual deformity of the area and can just be felt, then I would recommend no treatment. If the lump is visible, then surgical excision could be performed.   « less
