  1. We are having Dish Network installed next week. We are not getting an HD receiver because we do not have any HD TVs at this time. My question is, if I do have to replace a TV in the future and would buy an HD-capable one, will it work with that satellite receiver as a regular TV (not HD)? - Dish Newbie from Iowa

Yes, An HDTV will work with a standard satellite receiver. The picture just won't be as good and you won't be able to receive the many more channels that you could receive with an HD reciever. You should get an HDTV as soon as is possible so that you can get the HD Dishnetwork equipment now. You can always purchase a TV at some retailers that offer no interest for a year. You don't know what your missing!   « less
  2. I have been told that mounting a flat panel display over a fireplace or gas fired appliance will void the manufacturers warranty because of the extra heat created by the fireplace or gas fired appliance. Can you tell me if this is true? - Lyle B. Standish from San Jose, CA

To my knowledge there is no TV manufacturer that will void the warranty if you mount your display over the fireplace. When mounting a TV over the fireplace you must make sure that smoke and heat do not reach the set from the fireplace which will reduce the life of the set.   « less
  3. I just purchased an HDTV, and HD Directv receiver. I have a digital antenna and hooked it up to the receiver, then ran the setup for local channels. The call letters, channel number and programming infor are displayed on the TV, but I get no sound or picture for any of the four off-air local networks. I do get local Spanish language stations. If I connect the antenna to the back of the TV, it works fine and I get all the local channels. I've run the setup over and over again, all it says is "searching for signal" but no picture. The DirecTV people say I need a diplexor, but I can't see as how that will help. What's wrong? - No picture in Yuma from Yuma, AZ

If you are getting the signal OK to the TV but not to the receiver then it could most likely be the DTV receiver. Try resetting it again by pressing the red button under the accss card door. Sometimes that will fix the problem, even if you have not done so already. If you feel that you have done everything possible then I would ask DirecTV for another receiver.   « less
  4. Hi Arden, I recently purchased a Panasonic TH-42PX75U and along with that a Toshiba HD-A2, a new satellite dish (Directv 5 lnb) and HD DVR reciever. My questions are 1) do I need to attach the BBC's that come with the receiver and 2) how do I maximixe my plasma's picture quality for both TV and DVD feeds? I want to ensure that I am maximizes all of my products. Thank you, kindly. - Joshua Nelson from San Jose, CA

Yes Joshua, you do need to use the BBC's that come with the receiver to be able to pick up all of the future 100 channels of HDTV programming that will be available after September with DirecTV. The new dish receives Ka and Ku frequencies. The BBC converts the Ka signals down so that the receiver can accept them. To maximize your TV picture quality use the HDMI cables. But to really maximize your picture quality have your TV calibrated by an ISF certified technician. The cost will run about $400-$500 but will make the picture sparkle to your delight! It is analogous to having a piano tuned to play on key.   « less
  5. Hi Arden...I have a Vizio HDTV that is being used as TV #2 from a Dish Network dual tuner. The TV only has one coax input, and it is being used for the satellite feed from TV #1. How do I add and over the air antenna to get local HD channels since the coax input is already being used? - Kevin from Kansas
The way to do this is to connect the antenna input into the satellite receiver where it has an off air antenna input

  6. How do you hook up an off air antenna into a Direct TV reciever. Just install antenna on roof and then run coax into the off air part of the receiver. It does not seem to be working, do I need to do something else with the set up? - Anonymous from jax, fl

  9. Hi Arden, I do not own a HD television. The only tv I have is a couple of years old sd model. I understand the networks will be going to all hd. Does that mean that sd broad casts will not be available? Plus what does that mean for my present tv? Will the tv still work? What will the picture look like? Will I need to go buy a new tv or what? What to do? I live in a rural area and have to us a tower and a signal booster. - Tim from North Branch, MI

Yes Tim, The networks will be turning off the analog frequencies on Feb 18,2009. They have started converting already by transmiitting in both analog and digital for now. If your TV has an ATSC tuner then it will continue to work after the cutoof date. But if it doesn't then you will be able to purchase a digital converter box for $50-70 to make it work.   « less
  10. I have an antenna that gives a good signal to my HD TV. I do not have any paid TV service. Can I put a splitter on the line, run this second line through the wall outside and bury it so I can have an attenna to hook up in my garage? Thanks - james77777 from Chicago, IL

Well yes you can. But make sure that you use direct burial coax or put it into a conduit so it is protected from getting cut. You must be sure that you don't exceed 100 feet of cable also or you will get signal degradation at the other end. Then you will need to add an amplifier on the line. It might be just as easy to put another antenna up on the roof of your garage!    « less
