- we just moved into a new house and got three HD-DVR boxes with all the premium channels from comcast. It worked fine for the first day, the next day the picture became non color, just a black/white with red highlights. I rebooted the boxes and called comcast who had me reboot and still no change. If I connect the TV directly with the cable wire straight from the wall without going through the cable boxes I get fine color, but just the lower free stations not any of the premuim stations. Of course, I've checked that all the wires are connected tightly. What could this be? Thanks for your time and attention and I'm grateful for any help

- Arden, I purchased a TERX HDTVa amplified indoor antenna for my girlfriend's parents for Christmas just to try and get them some HD with their new TV. I didn't want to suprise them with an outdoor unit because they may be reluctant to put one up being that they have never really "seen" HD. This may be a simple question but with the antenna hooked up to the TV, are the local HD channels the same as if it were the regular signal, i.e. channel 7 for ABC, channel 11 for NBC, just as if they were using an non-HD capable TV and an analog signal? Thank You!

The programming is the same as analog. But the picture is much better when there are HD programs on, which is not all the time. The channels are no longer just 2,4,5,7, etc. They are now 2-1,2-2,4-1,4-2, etc. Note the dash in the channel. Also note that there are multiple channels for each station. There is different programming on the different channels for some of the stations. Also the digital stations do not just appear on the set the first time you connect your antenna to it. They must be searched for with a scan to capture them to watch. After the initial scan the set will know about them and you will just have to change the channel. In most locations in the San Jose, California area a TV will pick up about 30 different channels with a good rooftop antenna. And they are all free for the watching. « less

But when you use these cables you lose the audio connection through the HDMI cabling. So you will have to make the audio connection between the DVR and the television with the proper seperate cabling. « less
- Hi Arden. I have just bought an HDTV with HD tuner inside. My question is if I will get better quality by just connecting the coax out from the cable box to the coax in on the TV or if it would be better to use HDMI. Since my TV has an HDTV receiver I would think that it is better to get the signal directly from the cable coax instead of having the cable box convert it and send it via HDMI. Am I wrong? Thanks a lot.

A lot of people are confused by this very same thing. The HDTV tuner on the TV will only give you an HDTV (ATSC) signal through an antenna input from your local broadcasters over the air. It will not give you an HDTV signal from the cable company unless you use their digital cable box and are paying for the upgraded HDTV signal package. They will still not pass you that signal through the coax cable. It has to come out of the HD digital box through either the component connectors or the DVI connector. You have to pay extra for the HDTV programming from the cable company as well as through a satellite TV provider. I hope this clears things up for you. « less

If you don't have your audio and video cables on the same input of your receiver than you will hear the audio but not see the video. This is a common mistake with so many different inputs on a receiver these days. Double check that they are on the same input. I am sure that that will fix your problem. Have a happy A/V Day! « less
- Arden, I'm looking to upgrade to an expensive HDTV home theatre this season, and I'm trying to cut through the hype between DirecTV, Comcast, DishNetwork and HDTV antenna. Which service do you recommend for my system to get best picture, sound, and functionality? Why do you recommend it?

And a very hard one to answer easily. That is like asking me what is the best TV to buy. It really depends on what is important to you as far as what you mostly watch on your television. If you are a big sports fan than I suggest that you go with DirecTV. Because they offer the most sports packages. If you want to watch mostly HDTV programing then Dishnetwork offers the most HDTV channels 20 right now. But DirecTV will be coming out with over 100 HDTV channels this next year 2007. That will put them on top for HDTV in the near future. To get the most local HDTV programming you will need to have a rooftop antenna. Neither cable or satellite transmits all of the local digital channels because they don't have the bandwidth for it. As far as picture quality both satellite companies offer the same quality. Cable has the worst picture quality from what I have seen. I am an authorized DirecTV dealer if you decide to go with DirecTV. « less
- I am running composite video (red, blue, green) to my HDTV, and the picture is excellect. There seems to be different options for the audio cables. They include RCA, Digital Coax, and Optical. I'm running the cable 25 feet. What is the best option? Or am I better off running an HDMI cable for both audio and video?

Then you need to run either the coax or optical cable. The coax would be the cheapest cable to run at 25 feet. The optical would give you the best audio quality at that length. The easiest is to run the HDMI cable. Then you only have to run one cable for both audio and video for good quality for both. But this cable will run you about $100. « less
