  1. We just bought a 42" Samsung plasma TV. The picture is not as clear as it should be and we're wondering why. Movies are very clear, so we don't think it's the tv. We have DISH Network and the receiver is downstairs and our TV is upstairs, so we had to use a 50 ft. S-video cable to connect them. Do you think that's the reason? If not, do you have any other suggestions? We're very confused and frustrated since we can't seem to get any answers. Thank you! - Anna from West Fargo, ND

Hello Anna, First off the 50ft length is not the issue. An S-video cable can go 150 Feet easily. But an S-video cable is not the proper cable for HDTV. You need to use either component cables, DVI or HDMI cables to display HDTV on your HDTV. If your satellite receiver does not have any of those connections than it is not an HDTV satellite receiver. Talk with Dishnetwork about the proper HDTV receiver to use.   « less
  2. Arden, I have a roof antenna going to a 3 set splitter. I understand that I can receive Broadcast HD-TV on the HD channels of the locals TV outlets. However, recently, I have noticed HD-TV sets with built-in tuners are not equipped with coxial inputs. How would I connect my existing antenna to these new HD-TV sets? - Ern from Elk Grove, CA
That's not true. They must come with a caoxial input if they have a built in HDTV tuner. Look again!

  3. I am in the process of buying a new TV, but I want to continue using my old home theatre. My worry is just that all of the connections are available/will work. Is there a site that can help me with exactly how it would work best to connect all of the different pieces of my home theatre? Or would that be you? I have a Samsung HT-DS1000 home theatre/DVD player. I am getting a Samsung LN-S4051D 40" HDTV. I am also getting the Tivo HD box. Because I will have HD, is there any special cords I should be using? I heard you can not use s-video with HD. Is that true? Basicly, I don't want to get this really expensive TV and then not have it work with my home theatre. Thanks! - Charles B from Dallas, TX

I can help you with this confusing situation. In order to be able to see true HDTV picture quality. You must use one of the following types of cable connections to get the High Definition resolution. The first type is called component cables (3) which are colored RED,GREEN,BLUE. These only contain the video signal in analog. You need to connect the audio seperately. The second type is called DVI (Digital Video Interface) it is one connection. It also carries the video signal only. It is a bulky connector. The third type of connection is called HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface)it is the latest and best connection of today. It carries a true digital only signal with the audio as well. It is the smallest of all the connectors. It can also be adapted with a converter to DVI. But then you lose the audio capability having to run it seperately again. The only negative is that it contains the HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection). This can prevent you from playing, copying or receiving unauthorized programming.   « less
  4. Dear Arden, The Audio has mysteriously gone away on my Samsung HP-R4272 Plasma TV. It is hooked up to a Comcast DVR and the sound outputs through a Denon Audio system. It appears that there is no audio signal going to the TV. Comcast said it is not a cable problem. I have done all the trouble shooting for all 3 systems without success. Can you please shed some light? Thank you. Carla in Atlanta - Carla from Atlanta

Well Carla, This could be one of many things. But the best way to start to trouble shoot this, if you haven't done so already is to check that all the connections are good. The next thing to try is to eliminate the Denon receiver and run audio cables directly to the TV assuming your plasma has built in speakers. This would determine if the cable box is putting out audio. If it is then you need to now check the Denon receiver. Try switching the audio to a different input on the receiver. If you still haven't found the problem then check that the mute is NOT turned on. Also check the the Zone 1 output is on. Next check the input settings on the receiver to be sure the the correct digital input is assigned to the correct audio source. If you haven't found the problem by now. Then it is time to give up and send the receiver in for a checkup.   « less
  5. Is there something better than RG6 coax to run from the LNB of my satelite dish to the DVR? I have to run it approx. 75 feet from the dish to a low voltage distribution panel then another 30' to the DVR. Thanks - KM from Reno, NV

Well KM, RG6 is the best for this. But there are more than one type of RG6. The best is Solid Copper Center conductor. This is now required for all new DirecTV installations. If you are running it a total length of 105 feet, you should be fine with what you have. It is when you run it longer than 150 feet that you may start to have problems. Good Luck.   « less
  6. hi, I have a satellite box connected to my TV, how can i connect my other TV on it so the other room can watch the same thing? - joyski from London, UK
Just take the coaxial output from the receiver. Put a splitter on it and connect one of the runs to another room.

  8. I bought a 42 Samsung Plasma TV and a Samsung Home-Theater-in-a-box to go with it and I also have HD digital cable. Now my question deals with the connection of this because it is my understanding that the surround sound will not work when watching TV. Since the DVD player in the home theater system is also the reciever, will this set up work so I can use the surround sound all of the time. Cable in from outside to cable box -> HDMI out to HDMI in on DVD/Receiver -> HDMI out to HDMI in TV. Will this work?? - Sean from Holland, MI

Hello Raj, 6 pairs of speakers is too many for the system without an impedance matching speaker switch to feed the speakers with. I don't have enough information from you as to what your audio source is and how it is connected to the amplifier. You may be using an optical or coaxial audio input that is not assigned to your source. That will not give you any sound out. The other possibility is that you may have the mute turned on. That will turn off all audio out. Check those things and read the manual carefully to understand the setup of the unit.   « less
